I know what you’re thinking. My baby is about to be one month old, and I have no idea what to do with him all day. How do I entertain him? What activities can a baby even do?

Your baby has hit this first milestone and you’re convinced there must be SOMETHING you can do with my newborn. Rest assured there is.

Here are some activities and toys so you can play with your one month old baby all day to help stimulate brain development.

They will stop your newborn from getting bored (yep! Babies can get bored) and maybe you’ll even start getting smiles out of them during them.

Activity Gyms

One Month Baby Playing on Activity Gym

Babies LOVE activity play gyms! The best part is there are so many to choose from. As your baby grows, they will use the mat in different ways.

At one month old, they may just look up at the toys, but they will learn to play with them in time. Some even have piano keys for the baby to kick as he gets older.

Activity gyms are great to stimulate brain development as there is so much to learn and grow with on them.

Here are some great activity mats perfect for 1 month olds that they will grow with:

Riding a Bicycle

Sit on a couch with your baby either laying down with his head on your knees or on a boppy pillow facing you.

Grab his feet and make a circular motion one leg at a time like his legs are riding a bicycle and sing: (to the tune of The Farmer and the Dell)

We’re riding on a bike, we’re riding on a bike

Oh, how I love to ride, we’re riding on a bike.

(Pump his legs up and down at the same time)

We’re pumping on the brakes, we’re pumping on the brakes

Oh, how I love to ride, we’re pumping on the brakes.

(Repeat song x3)

You can also sing other songs such as Old McDonald, Pop Goes the Weasel, and more.

This activity doubles as a gas relief technique. Pumping and cycling your baby’s legs helps relieve gas. So, you can stimulate your newborn AND make him less fussy at the same time!

Play Music

Music not only helps stimulate brain development for a one month old baby, it can also work to calm your newborn down when fussy.

Toys like a mobile or glowworm work wonders to keep your baby entertained throughout the day.

Riding a Horse

My Papa used to do this activity with me when I was younger and it’s something one month old babies love.

Place your baby on one or both knees and bounce your knee up and down to make your baby go in a bouncing motion.

Music always makes everything better. I personally love to sing the William Tell Overture while bouncing him. It’s the typical horse riding song that everyone knows.

Rattles

Rattles are a great first toy for any baby. There are ones they can hold and ones you can shake in front of them. The sound is very soothing and stimulating to your newborn.

Personally my one month old could listen to his special rattle all day every day.

*rattles can simulate the sound of rain. If your baby is fussy, try YouTubing soothing rain to help calm him down. This has worked wonders with all our children.

Newborn one month baby doing tummy time

Tummy Time

You can start tummy time with your newborn as soon as their umbilical stump falls off! Some even say you can start it sooner.

Start with 1-2 minutes and work your way up to what your baby can handle.

Tummy time doesn’t have to just be on the floor. Lay back on the couch in a leaned back seated position and lay your baby on your stomach with his head near your neck.

Your baby will lift his head here and you get some extra cuddle time.

Give Them a Bath

Babies can start taking baths that get their entire body wet as soon as their umbilical stump falls off. Set up a little bath with a soft washcloth to help bond and give your baby a little stimulation.

Stay away from soap as long as you can as it can cause dryness and other skin issues with sensitive skin and only bathe your newborn 1-2 times a week.

Talk to Them

One of the best things you can do with your one month old all day is to talk to them. Nothing will stimulate brain development than having face time with their mommy and hearing them talk.

As your baby starts to coo, have conversations with him! Ask him a question and then wait a minute and let them answer.

This is great practice for talking to them as they grow older to help with speech.

Read to Them

Sometimes you can get a little bored of basically talking to yourself. Reading is a great alternative. You can pick up a bunch of small books you may have gotten at your baby shower.

I personally enjoy a longer book you can keep reading that is baby-friendly. Something like Winnie-the-Pooh.

I personally downloaded it onto iBooks back when my daughter was born and now read it to my son.

This is also a great time to introduce touch-and-feel books and crinkly books. Textures and sounds help stimulate your baby and takes reading to a whole new level.

Go on Your Every Day Trips

Just because you have a newborn, doesn’t mean your bound to the house. It’s important to start getting out there with our baby to entertain them and yourself.

Otherwise, any stimulation could cause him to feel overstimulated as time goes on.

So go on out there and go grocery shopping, clothes shopping (you’ll probably need some new clothes before you fit into your pre-pregnancy ones), or even eat at a restaurant.

There are no limitations as to when to bring a newborn out. Just make sure you are cleared to drive and walk around fine before doing so.

Nap Time

One month old babies don’t really have a nap schedule. They sleep when they want. As your one month old grows, you will start to notice patterns as to when they like to sleep.

This usually starts to appear around the one month mark.

When the baby is asleep, place him in his bassinet or crib, turn the monitor on, and use the time to either clean, relax, or get some rest.

Don’t feel guilty if your baby sleeps the majority of some days. It’s totally normal and could mean he is going through a growth spurt.

Mirrors

When you look in a mirror, you see yourself, right? Not for babies. A one month old has no idea what he looks like, so when he looks in a mirror, he just sees a baby.

Mirrors are great activity to stimulate the brain as they get to learn who that baby in the mirror is.

Going for a walk with a new baby

Go For a Walk

Fresh air will keep you sane. It can be tempting to stay hibernated in the house the first few weeks, or even months, after your baby.

Get the stroller out and go for a walk around the block or even in a nearby park. Walking is great for you in the postpartum period as well.

If you’re like me, both of my babies were born in 20 degree (or below) average temperature months. As soon as the weather gets warm enough, bundle your little one up in blankets and a hat and go for a walk.

If you’re dying to get out before the weather is nice, find a local mall to walk.

What is your favorite way to play with your one month old baby all day?

This article has so many great ideas! One month is a hard age for knowing what to do to interact and pass the time, and I love these ideas! My boys both loved activity gyms and reading.
