What is an Air Fryer?
An air fryer is an appliance that cooks food with little or no oil that results in crispy, but still juicy food.
It is like a convection oven in that it blows air around the food to cook it. It differs in that the heat source is above the food pulling the air up and away from the food.
The Magic Chef® 3.7 Quart Digital Air Fryer, Healthy Cooking, Dishwasher Safe Basket with Free Recipe Book does just that. Food is cooked efficiently and evenly, and I had the chance to put that to the test.
What Can You Cook in An Air Fryer?
There are so many appliances out there that cook one thing. Think about it – waffles, ice cream, coffee. They all have one machine that makes one specific food.
Wouldn’t it be nice to have one appliance that is versatile? Air fryers can cook anything from meats and vegetables to muffins and cookies.
I’ve cooked delicious French fries, pork chops, frozen chicken, and even asparagus in my Magic Chef 3.7 Quart Digital Air Fryer.
The air fryer can hold up to 3.7 quarts of food. It’s honestly perfect for a family of 2-4 people. You can easily make side dishes all in one batch, which can be crucial on those busy weeknights.
If you’re cooking larger main dish meals, you will need to cook in batches (think foods like hamburgers, chicken tenders, and pork chops). This is normal for most air fryers as they need to be placed in a single layer to cook evenly.
Putting the Air Fryer to the Test
When I first opened the air fryer, I noticed a plastic smell. After I let the appliance have some air outside of the package for a few hours, the smell went away completely.
The Magic Chef 3.7 Quart Digital Air Fryer has a digital interface. It shows the time and temperature of the air fryer and alternates between the two while cooking.
I personally have a timer counting upward when I cook to know how long the food’s been cooking for. Foods can vary on the amount and thickness and this way the fryer doesn’t turn off while I’m cooking. The timer on this air fryer counts down (as most timers do) and I love it.
I know exactly how long each food has been cooking for decreasing the chance of burning my food. When you open the air fryer to shake the basket, the timer stays on the correct time. This allows you to check your food without messing with it again.
It Comes With Presets
The Magic Chef 3.7 Quart Digital Air Fryer has 7 easy presets included on its digital interface to make cooking easier. The common complaint I hear from people with air fryers is they don’t know what to cook or how to cook it. Now it’s listed right on the air fryer.
I had the chance to try out the French Fries setting. I used 3 large potatoes to fill the basket about halfway.
Although air fryers are great to use as no-oil appliances, I personally use a little oil for most of the food I cook in them. It gives it that extra added flavor. You only need 1 tsp – 1 TBSP of oil.
I added the oil, salt, and pepper, hit the French fry button and let it do its thing. I shook the basket about every 5 minutes or so to make sure they cooked evenly.
The fries turned out cooked, but not as dark and crispy as I like. I cooked them for another 10 minutes and they were delicious!
The presets included are still great for beginners who need guidance on what and how to cook certain foods.
A Bonus: Healthy Cooking with an Oil-Less Air Fryer Cookbook
The air fryer includes an entire cookbook with 24 delicious recipes. Now I’m not just talking about here’s how you make French fries.
These are legitimate recipes you can put on your regular menu like Cheesy Pull-apart bread and Bacon Cheeseburger Pizza (yum!). I haven’t had a chance to try out the recipes in the booklet yet, but look forward to trying them out soon.
How Do I Like The Air Fryer?
I am impressed with the air fryer. It cooks food evenly and the food tastes amazing. The basket is non-stick, so I haven’t had to spray any extra oil on it before putting food in it.
The French fries were crispy, the asparagus cooked perfectly, and the frozen chicken cooked throughout.
It is a little tough to push and pull the basket in and out while cooking, but it clicks in very well. I know this button can get looser over time, so I would rather have one that is tough to use than one that doesn’t work a few months down the line.
I have noticed the sliding button to pull the basket out holds a lot of hot condensation, so I’ve been slightly careful about when I shake the basket with my hand there.
